Grace and Good Works
Grace IS the Message of the Hour
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:8-10
Without grace, faith can become legalism.
Without faith, grace can become sovereignty.
Where Do Works Fit in the Christian Life?
Are We Saved, Made Righteous by Works?
Romans 4:1-5 - “What then shall we say that Abraham our father has found according to the flesh? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God (he would before men). 3 For what does the Scripture say? (Genesis 15:6) “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” 4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. 5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness…”
Isaiah 64:6 - “We are all like an unclean thing and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags.”
Titus 3:4-7 - “But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
But, Can We Be Justified By Works At All?
James 2:14-16 “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works (corresponding actions), is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble (in reverence)! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish (empty)man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar (years after his salvation)? 22 Do you see that faith was working together (partnered)with his works, and by works faith was made perfect (completed)? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way ? (years after salvation)
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”

The Church is the strongest influence for God and against the world.
What Are Good Works?
There are good works and bad works, right and wrong uses of works.
You cannot find one scripture defining works and make all others fit it.
Works are wrong when used to win God’s love or acclaim of people.
Works are right and good when used as a witness to win the lost.
What makes works right or wrong is the motive behind them.
Good works are our entrance into the world and society around us.
a. The priest and Levite both passed by the man lying in the road and would not reach out to him. Don’t hang a “do not disturb” sign on your life.
b. a. The Good Samaritan reached out in compassion.

A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
