Using the Name of Jesus
“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Colossians 3:17
The name of Jesus is our power of attorney.
Heaven stands behind that name.
Jesus Came in the Name of the Father
“I speak what I have seen with My Father.” John 8:38
“Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father.” John 10:32
“He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” Matthew 10:40
The Name is to be Used Against Satan, Demons, and Satan’s Works
“He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”
Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”
And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke 10:19
Authority vs. power.
The name is not a magic wand to make things happen or convince yourself.
Not a hope. “Are you healed?” “In the name of Jesus.”
Not a swear of commitment - “I will do it in Jesus’ name.” Let your yes be yes, and your no, no.
The Name We Use is His Human Name: Jesus, not Christ
You must have faith in the name of Jesus.
“Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” 7 And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. 8 So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them—walking, leaping, and praising God.
Now as the lame man who was healed held on to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the porch which is called Solomon’s, greatly amazed. 12 So when Peter saw it, he responded to the people: “Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let Him go.
16 And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.” Acts 3:6-8, 11-13, 16
The World Has Trouble With Jesus’ Name
“And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.” Acts 5:40
We see this today with public prayers.
The world which hates Jesus’ name will one day have to accept it (Philippians 2:10).
Signs and Wonders Occur in the Name of Jesus
“But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.” Acts 8:12
Only Christians can use the name.
Sinners cannot use the name.
The seven sons of Sceva tried, “in the name of Jesus that Paul preaches.”
Preaching Should Be Done In Jesus’ Name
“But Barnabas took him (Paul) and brought him to the apostles. And he declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.” Acts 9:27
Demons Are Cast Out in Jesus’ Name
“This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” 18 And this she did for many days.
But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour.” Acts 16:17-18
Prayers Should Be Made to the Father
Pray this way - “Our Father Who art in heaven.”
